Wu Yan was born in Jiangsu, China in 1982 and he joined the National Ballet of China in 2001. A China National Grade 1 Actor, Wu was invited to perform in the International Dance Festival in the United States in 2006. He was also named by Dance Magazine in Europe as one of the most compelling Asian male dancers in 2009.

He has performed in many ballet works, including Eros in Sylvia, Ali in Le Corsaire,Mercutioin Romeo and Juliet, Firebird, Onegin, Pink Floyd Ballet and Carmen. He also performed important roles in Swan Lake, Giselle, La Bayadere, Don Quixote, Pas de Quarte, Grand Pas Classique, Ben Stevenson's Fountain of Tears, Five Poems, William Forsythe's In the Middle, Kazimir'sColours, Memories and Bamboo.
