Classical Ballet / Soloist

Rie Ichikawa’s international training began at Nagano Ballet under the direction of Teruyo Kurashima, continued at The Arts Educational London Schools, and then at Houston Ballet Academy under the direction of Clara Cravey and Steve Brule. She finished in first place at the Japan Competition in 1990 and 1991, and was the Arts Educational winner of the Markova Award in 1994.

Prior to joining Boston Ballet in 1999 as a member of the corps de ballet, Ichikawa danced with Ballet Arizona, performing the Sugar Plum Fairy and other roles in The Nutcracker, as well as Diana & Acteon Pas de Deux and principal roles in Balanchine’s Rubies and Agon. Her repertory with Boston Ballet includes Lise in Sir Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée; Bianca in John Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew; Peasant pas de trios, pas de cinq and Four Cygnets in Mikko Nissinen’s Swan Lake; Blossom in James Kudelka’s Cinderella, Songbird Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty; Snow Queen and Sugar Plum Fairy in Nissinen’s The Nutcracker; George Balanchine’s Divertinmento No. 15, Theme and Variations and Serenade; Lucinda Childs’ Ten Part Suite; Val Caniparoli’s Lambarena, Mark Morris’ Up and Down, Helen Pickett’s Etesian, Jiří Kylián's Falling Angels; Asaf Messerer’s Moszkowski Waltz, Bronislava Nijinska’s Les Noces, Christopher Wheeldon’s Firebird and The Four Seasons; Rudi van Dantzig’s Four Last Songs; and Michael Pink’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Ichikawa was promoted to second soloist in 2004 and to soloist in 2006. She tours Japan each summer, performing with various Russian guest artists.
