JM discovered dance while he was a Theater Arts major at the Philippine High School for the Arts. He performed the lead in the dance-drama Ang Hatol ng Guhit na Bilog, which was collaborated on by Agnes Locsin, Shamaine Buencamino, and Biag Gaongen, which he performed for the 8th Asian Arts Festival in China. JM joined Ballet Philippines as a scholar in 2004 with Noordin Jumalon as his teacher. He was promoted as an apprentice a year later.

In 2007, he competed at the 9th New York International Ballet Competition, and joined the company when he returned.
