Gauthier Dance

Private Company active 8 years, 5 months ago

Gauthier Dance is the dance ensemble of Theaterhaus Stuttgart with ten uniquely talented dancers under the direction of the choreographer, dancer and musician Eric Gauthier. Founded in October 2007 the company has rapidly cut a niche for itself in the international dance scene. Gauthier Dance`s trademark is ambitious choreographies characterised by their humour, originality and technical virtuosity. That has led to sold-out shows and euphoria from public and press alike. By combining artistry and accessibility without creating unnecessary hurdles, the company`s aim of attracting a new audience to contemporary dance has been a resounding success
Quality has been the constant of the previous productions SIX PACK, High Five, Four Play, M.M. & More, Out of the Box I and II, POPPEA//POPPEA, Lucky Seven and numerous Gauthier Dance Specials, for which Gauthier himself as well as notable contemporary choreographers such as Mauro Bigonzetti, Alejandro Cerrudo, William Forsythe, Itzik Galili, Jirí Kylián, Paul Lightfoot & Sol León, Hans van Manen, Christian Spuck and Philip Taylor have provided works or created world premieres for Gauthier Dance.
For his rapid rise to feted choreographer and artistic director of the Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart, Eric Gauthier has been awarded the German Dance Prize »Future« 2011 for choreography. Since then both ballet critics and prominent representatives of the contemporary dance scene have claimed Gauthier as one of their own: The free dance scene can learn a few things from Gauthier Dance writes Kulturvollzug, while according to the Kronen Zeitung: He brings glamour and humour to the classics.
Given the specific structural and economic conditions faced by a resident company of a private theatre, Gauthier Dance has demonstrated considerable competence as well as a remarkable productivity. The Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart can count more international appearances than many other German dance ensembles. Gauthier Dance have guested in Germany, Europe – including Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Luxembourg – and internationally. Wherever the company appears they are greeted with enthusiasm and immediately booked for follow-up shows.
Despite all the success, the company has never neglected its social engagement. For the artistic director Eric Gauthier, the son of a notable Canadian Alzheimer`s specialist, making dance accessible to as many people as possible is a task that is particularly close to his heart. With the Gauthier Dance Mobile, the ensemble guests in, among other places, hospitals, nursing homes and youth centres, bringing dance to people who are unable to visit the theatre. In addition, once a year, Eric Gauthier presents a dance gala at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart in support of Alzheimer`s research to raise awareness of the still largely taboo subject of dementia.
