Edmonton School of Ballet

Edmonton Contemporary Dancers was created in 1997 to provide extensive performing experience for dancers ages fourteen to twenty.
Under the Direction of Tina Covlin -Dewart, the group was chosen to represent Canada at the 1997 Youth World Showcase during the Jazz Dance World Congress in Weisbaden, Germany . ECD also performed in the prestigious Leo Choreography Award Competition. Edmonton Contemporary Dancers present numerous performances each year to introduce audiences to the vast scope of jazz and modern dance. Dancers from this company have gone on to Decidedly Jazz Dance Works, Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, and the School of the Toronto Dance Theatre. In 2001, the company travelled to New York where the dancers took classes at Alvin Ailey School, Steps, Broadway Dance Center and Limon School. In addition the dancers attended several dance performances on, and off, Broadway. These performances included Alvin Ailey II in the heart of Harlem, Mark Morris Dance Company in Brooklyn, Risa Steinberg in the Bowery, Contact at Lincoln Center, Ballet Tech in Soho, and Fosse with Ben Vereen in the heart of Broadway. Each show was unique and offered the ESB dancers a glimpse of what it takes to be a professional among the best in the world

Performances in the 2002-2003 season included: the Great Great Dance Show, Community Spirit at Grant MacEwan, North Battleford Dance Festival and Essence of Dance. 2003-2004 included the Great Great Dance Show, Canadian National Dance Championships, and Essence of Dance.

ECD is proud to mentor young choreographers such as Shawna Armstrong, Susan Kendal, Laura Smyth, Jayme Tchir and Charlie Wilson. ECD is pleased to present new works from their current season as well as re-creations from previous seasons.

For 2004-2005, Edmonton Contemporary Dancers will be presenting works from guest choreographers Laurie Alston, Ashleen MacPherson, Jayme Tchir and Charlie Wilson, as well as new works from Tina Covlin-Dewart, Artistic Director. ECD is also very excited about travelling to New York in 2005.
