The State Academic Opera Theatre of Russia is one of the oldest in Russia - its first season opened in 1912.

Following the Russian Revolution the Theatre was called The Laboratory of Soviet Opera and often the playbills would state "The right to first performance belongs to the Theatre." Throughout the years the most distinguished artistes have performed at the theatre and great singers such as Kozlovsky, Lemeshev and Arkhipova started their careers in Yekaterinburg.

Currently the theatre presents a varied repertoire that includes approximately 40 operas and ballets.
