The theatre was constructed in 1874-1879 under the direction of R. Karvovskiy.
On August, 20th, 1921 the theatre reopened with its first theatrical season following the civil war.
The theatre building underwent complete reconstruction 1957-1959 and in 1965 the name of P. Tchaikovsky The title "Academic" was awarded in 1969.
The ballet company became a permanent institution in 1920 with the establishment of the first ballet school in Perm. A performance of Giselle opened the first ballet season on 2 February 1926. During World War 2 the Kirov Ballet Company and the Vaganova Ballet Academy was moved to Perm and performed for three years in the city. This gave new impetus to the Perm Ballet Company and School and now it is the nation’s third most important ballet company, sharing the standards and the style of the famous Kirov/Mariinsky school, the Vaganova Academy.
The Ballet Company is unique in that it draws all of its dancers from its own school , which is one of the most prestigious training institutions for ballet in Russia.
The opera was founded by Sergei Diaghilev in 1870. In 1896 the theatre was placed in the care of the municipal duma and opened its first season under municipal management with a performance of Aida.
