The Tatar Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre was established in 1934 by the Government of the Tatar Republic. One year earlier an opera studio was opened in the city of Kazan.

A ballet company was started at the same time.

In 1936 work started on the theatre's new building, which opened on 28 September 1956.
