The theatre building was constructed in neoclassical style in 1936-1938 by N. Katsenelenbogen as a project of N. Trotsky. Its prime purpose is a Palace of Culture and it also functions as an opera and ballet theatre.
The opera company is proud of its creative connections with the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow. The opera company performed at Samara (called Kuybyshev in those says) between 1941 and 1943.
The ballet company was established in 1933 and and is connected with the classical traditions of the St. Petersburg Vaganova Academy, having been managed throughout its history by Petersburgers: Natalia Danilov (1940 - 1967), Alla Shelest (1970 - 1973), Igor Tchernyshev (1976 - 1995), Nikita Dolgushin (1997 - 2005) and since 2008 - Kirill Shmorgoner.
