The St. Petersburg State Theatre of Classical Ballet was founded in St-Petersburg in 1947.It was originally a touring company consisting of 35 people (including the staff). The idea of the founding of such an unusual troupe belonged to Robert Gerbek - the famous dancer and soloist of the Mariinsky (Kirov) Theatre. The Novgorod Philharmonic Society also took part in working out the project.

The Honored Actor of Russia Viktor Korolkov has been the Artistic Director of the theatre since 1988.
