The troupe that would come to be known as the Natalya Sats Musical Theatre started out in a former movie house as the Moscow Children's Theatre in 1921.
In 1936, the troupe moved out of the former movie house into a large theatre on Sverdlov Square near the Bolshoi Theatre. At this time troupe's name was changed to the Central Children's Theatre. Here Natalya Sats pioneered a combination of music, dance, acrobatics, drama and multimedia. Known as "synthesized theatre" it has become the dominant style of children's theatre.
In the same year, 1936, Natalya Sats asked Sergei Prokofiev to write a work that would teach the orchestral instruments to children. The composer wrote "Peter and the Wolf" in a couple of weeks. The first performance of the symphonic fairy tale was on May 2, 1936.

The Central Children's Theatre was renamed the Natalya Sats Musical Theatre in 1965 and in 1979 moved into the Palace of Children's Opera, which was designed specially for the company.
