In 1940 the Gorki Theatre of Musical Comedy went on tour to Irkutsk and in March 1941 made their stay permanent.

In 1962 the theatre started its first choreographic courses, which provided the opportunity to produce ballets.

In 2001 the theatre celebrated its 60th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the Governor of the Irkutsk region ordered the Irkutsk State Musical Theatre to add the name N.M. Zagorsky to its title in honour of Nikolai Matveevicha Zagorsky, who was head of the theatre from 1961 to 1975 and made a huge contribution to its development.
