Maine State Ballet Company
Maine State Ballet was incorporated in 1986 as a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. In early 2006, Maine State Ballet and its affiliate dance school, the Maine State School for the Performing Arts, blended into one not-for-profit institution. Maine State Ballet is run by a Board of Directors and is supported though dance school tuition, performance ticket sales, business partnerships and individual donors
Maine State Ballet's Mission is to enrich the Maine community through education, outreach and expanded enjoyment of the performing arts.
Maine State Ballet educates, entertains, and enriches the community through versatile and varied dance programs. We encourage students to become active, intelligent young artists who will emerge as leaders in their communities. Maine State Ballet's dance classes, outreach events, lecture demonstrations in the schools and Backstage children's concert series embody the fundamental element of our educational vision.
Nutcracker Finale
Maine State Ballet's maintains a dance school population of 500 dancers ranging in age from 3 to 62 years and residing in large area of southern Maine. Students come from towns as distant as Wells, Gardiner, Harrison, and Hollis.
In addition to its renowned production of The Nutcracker, Maine State Ballet has also presented numerous spectacular full-length ballets - Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Cinderella, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Alice in Wonderland, Hansel and Gretel, Coppelia, and the time honored Swan Lake - as well as the impressive one act productions of Peter and the Wolf, Paquita, The Firebird and Can Can Parisien, to name a few.
Linda MacArthur Miele, a former member of the New York City Ballet and protégé of George Balanchine, continues to expand Maine State Ballet's repertoire to include new full-length productions and smaller pieces that showcase the company's growing number of talented dancers. Broadway veteran and master tap teacher Jonathan Miele co-directs Maine State Ballet’s affiliated School for the Performing Arts and directs the annual Night of Broadway production.
Maine State Ballet's Falmouth location now houses an in-house theater, a 115 seat performance space with a 50 foot stage. This enables Maine State Ballet to realize its vision of offering a wide range of dance productions in our community on a regular basis. The 2008 season at Merrill Auditorium and the Maine State Ballet Theater has included 36 performances and reached audiences of over 12,000. The demographics of Maine State Ballet's annual audience includes persons from age 3 through senior citizens, predominantly from southern Maine but coming from as far as Presque Isle, Boston and southern New England.
