The Chuvash musical-drama theatre opened in 1960 under the directorship of Boris Markov. The first ballet performance, Giselle, was given In 1967.
In 1969 the musical troupe was separated from the independent Chuvash musical theatre and in 1993 was transformed into the Chuvash State Opera and Ballet Theatre. The present building for company was constructed in 1985.
