In 1909 the city of Ufa built a community cultural centre named after S. Aksakov. In 1938 this building became the home of the Bashkortostan State Opera & Ballet Theatre.

The Bashkortostan Opera Studio was opened in 1932.

The Bashkortostan Ballet began its history in 1940 with the ballet Coppelia. The Bashkortostan Ballet School opened in 1955 and started to train dancers for the company.

In October 1987 the theatre reopened after renovation.
