Ballet company of National Moravian - Silesian Theatre

The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava was established in October 1918 as a permanent Czech professional theatre. Officially, its work was launched on August 12, 1919. At the time of its initiation it followed up with the long lasting tradition of amateurish as well as professional theatre of Czech and German speaking Ostrava region.
The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre consisted of ballet, drama, opera and operetta artistic ensembles and for their performances the theatre acquired a building of the Municipal Theatre, opened in 1907 and until this time served only as a German theatre. The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre had to share the building with Deutsches Theater till 1938.
During the Second World War National House (opened in 1894 and initially served as a Czech theatre before the rise of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre), was used as a theatre building. After 1945 it was permanently acquired to the premises of the Municipal Theatre.
Since this time the artistic ensembles of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre have alternated in their performances in both the buildings - Antonin Dvorak Theatre (the Municipal Theatre, from 1945 the Provincial Theatre, from 1949 to 1990 Zdenek Nejedly Theatre) and Jiri Myron Theatre (National House, from 1951 to 1954 the Folk House).
The historical name the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre has been used again since 1995. Today the theatre consists of four artistic ensembles (ballet - drama - opera - operetta) and serves for auditorium not only from Ostrava but from its suburbs as well as its adjacent regions. The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre annually stages 16 - 19 premieres in both buildings. (during the reconstruction of Antonin Dvorak Theatre / 1st June 1999 - 30th November 2000 / on the stage of the Cultural Center Vitkovice s. c., instead). In 2006 about 200 thousand auditors attended about 450 performances of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre.
